A Blessing for My Grandson on Father’s Day

Bless this child with the understanding that he is loved without limits

And with the vulnerability to freely love others.

Bless this child with a deep capacity for experiencing God’s presence,

Along with a ceaseless need for more of the Divine.

Bless this child with the confidence to know he is the Image of God

Uniquely given to the world by simply being himself.

Bless this child with a longing for the gifts of nature,

For the earthy splendor and beauty that feeds the soul.

Bless this child to be curious about all people, places, and things,

So that he sees the good in others and has compassion for what is broken.

Bless this child with a love for adventure and discovery,

Along with a sense of deep peace when at home.

Bless this child with the courage to set right what is wrong,

As well as the wisdom to walk alongside and through what he cannot change.

Bless this child with appreciation for simplicity and a clear sense of how much is enough,

Protecting him from wanting and consuming more than he needs.

Bless this child with freedom from fear that is false,

Giving him instead an imagination for the possibility of what good can be.

Bless this child with winning some battles and losing others,

For both losing and winning are seeds that grow wisdom.

Bless this child with the peace of knowing that he is safely held

Within the grace of God, the compassion of family, and the kindness of community.

Bless this child with

The generous love of the Father,

The gentle grace of the Son,

And the fresh wind of the Spirit,

For now and evermore.

Amen.
